Distinguished Lecturers Program

The IEEE RAS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Program is aimed at promoting the research areas of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society as identified by its Technical Committees. The Distinguished Lecturer mechanism is especially desirable for RAS Chapters that do not regularly have the opportunity to invite international speakers or to travel to conferences.

Distinguished Lecturers may be requested by IEEE RAS Section or IEEE RAS Student Branch Chapters. Other groups interested in building relationships with RAS are also welcome to make requests for DLs.

The procedure for requesting an RAS DL should be initiated at least 6 months prior to the event.

The requestor is encouraged to identify up to 1-3 potential DLs by preference.

The requestor completes the DL Request Form

Once Request Form is submitted, the DL Coordinator will consider the request, and may seek more information. After a request has been approved, the DL Coordinator will notify the requesting organization and the requested DL. It will then be up to the two parties to coordinate the event -- speaking date, travel arrangements, etc.

Once the arrangements are finalized, the requestor must confirm the event by submitting an Approved DL Form.

The requesting organization/chapter must submit a Distinguished Lecture Report within 30 days of the event.

Program Description

Each TC of RAS nominates three (3) distinguished lecturers (DLs) for their TC, one for each of the 3 geographical regions of RAS. When TCs nominate distinguished lecturers, they are encouraged to consider including underrepresented groups, such as women, and also ``rising star’’ researchers.

DLs will serve for terms of two (2) years, which may be renewed once. After serving two consecutive terms, an individual should sit out at least two years before being considered as a DL again. RAS can provide travel support for DLs, up to a maximum of $3000 according to RAS travel reimbursement guidelines.

Each nominee will provide a CV, a biosketch (suitable for posting on the web), a link to a webpage in English, and abstracts of at least one talk that they would be willing to give as a RAS DL.

The nominees will be reviewed by an approval committee including representatives from MAB, TAB, and RAS leadership. The committee will be chaired by the RAS DL Coordinator, and will include the MAB VP, the TAB VP, the RAS president, RAS junior past president,  RAS senior past president, and the RAS president-elect.

Financial Support for Distinguished Lecturer Visits

The total cost of a Distinguished Lecturer's dedicated travel will be supported up to $3,000 based upon RAS Reimbursement Procedures for Travel and other Expenses. Note that this reimbursement is made directly to the lecturer for their travel.

RAS goal is to support as many chapters as possible so priority will be given to requests that have not received prior funding for activities.
